Hope and Recovery: It’s Not “All in Your Head”

We recognise that your brain, body and nervous system are deeply connected. With the right support, understanding, and evidence-based therapies, it is possible to make sense of your symptoms, build resources and skills, and move towards a more fulfilling life. Recovery is not only possible, it is a journey you do not have to take alone.

Many people experience physical symptoms—such as pain, fatigue, “brain fog”, or sudden ‘episodes’—that do not have a clear medical explanation. These are known as Medically Unexplained Symptoms (MUS) and, in some cases, may be diagnosed as Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).

For some, these symptoms are linked to complex trauma: repeated or prolonged exposure to distressing events, often beginning in childhood or occurring over an extended period. Complex trauma can affect both emotional wellbeing and physical health, sometimes leading to persistent symptoms without a clear medical cause.

We recognise that these symptoms are real and meaningful, even when tests do not reveal a physical cause.

We can help you to understand and see these symptoms differently, with hope and optimism. Our approach combines trauma-informed care, Psychological Medicine, and therapies such as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) to support healing and recovery in both mind and body.

Examples of practical approaches

  • Mindful Awareness: Notice your thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations without judgement. Mindfulness can help reduce distress and increase your sense of control.
  • Grounding: Use deep breathing, focusing on your senses, or gentle movement to stay present and manage overwhelming sensations.
  • Acceptance:  Learn to accept and create space for uncomfortable sensations and emotions as part of your experience, rather than fighting or avoiding them.
  • Values-Based Action: Identify what matters most to you and take steps in line with those values, even when symptoms are present.
  • EMDR Processing: Work with us to desensitise and reprocess difficult and overwhelming memories that may be linked to your symptoms, helping to reduce their intensity and impact.
  • Self-Compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and patience. Remember that your symptoms are real and valid, and recovery is a gradual process.
  • Collaborative Care: Psychological Medicine involves supporting and advocating for you and working with your healthcare team to address both physical and psychological aspects of your symptoms, ensuring a holistic approach to your health and wellbeing.

Together, we will find what works best for you and support you on your recovery journey.
